It’s been almost a whole season since the last update on the packing process. The entire spirit store has been relocated, which was very heavy work, while the vertebrate store and bird store are currently mid-move. There’s roughly 25 days left to finish packing, then #teamUMZC will begin the next phase of the big move; a 14 week window in which to shift the lot into their new stores (currently under construction).
The bird store is gradually being emptied of its treasures. Here’s a selection of just some of the specimens, including our famous Falkland Island steamer duck – personally collected my Darwin and his geological hammer – now safely packed away.
The team have also been busy moving some of our larger display specimens, such as the Komodo dragon. Here is Collections Manager Matt and volunteer Charis wheeling our Varanus komodoensis from the gallery to a temporary home.
Also on the move was our Atlantic tarpon from the display case at the entrance to the museum. Quite a hefty catch, it needed four of team UMZC’s strongest specimens to move it safely!
Pretty soon all cupboards will be bare, watch this space to track our progress. The project is running on schedule thanks to our dedicated team and our fantastic, invaluable volunteers. Remember you can keep up with our news on our Facebook page and also by following us on Twitter: @ZoologyMuseum.
